Forest is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Bedford County, Virginia. At the time of the 2020 census, the population was 11,709. It is included in the Lynchburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Forest is a suburban neighborhood in the Lynchburg metropolitan area, comprised of numerous subdivided homes carved from and around nearby farms and woodlands. The largest development is the Ivy Hill neighborhood, which is centered on the Ivy Hill Golf Course. The community has grown and developed rapidly over the last decade, especially after Route 221/Forest Road was extended to four lanes in 2009.
Commercial business and housing growth, which slowed temporarily during the 2007-2010 crisis, are projected to resume in the near future. The recent development of commercial malls such as Cavalier Corner and the enormous Forest Square strip mall next to the post office, as well as the addition of multiple restaurants, demonstrates this progress. Jefferson Forest High School, Jefferson Forest Middle School, Forest Elementary School, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, Timberlake Christian School, and New London Academy are all located in Forest.
