Bedford is an incorporated town and previous independent city in Virginia’s Bedford County. It is Bedford County’s county seat. The population was 6,657 at the time of the 2020 census. It is included in the Lynchburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Originally called Liberty, Bedford was named after the Colonial victory against Cornwallis at Yorktown. Liberty was founded as a village in 1782 and became the center of government for Bedford County, displacing New London, which became part of the newly constituted Campbell County. Liberty incorporated as a municipality in 1839 and changed its name to Bedford City in 1890. Bedford restored to town status in 1912, reverted to city status in 1968, and reverted to town status once more in 2013.
